The PTC library has all sorts of sources to help with the Poetry Analysis Assignment! The Online Catalog and the Literature/Humanities databases are all great places to find information about your poet and to help you understand and analyze your poem. Databases are dedicated to specific subjects and/or source types, while the online catalog searches all source types and subjects in the print and electronic collections. If you are unsure where to start, click on the Need Help? tab of this guide to chat with a librarian. Research isn't always an easy or quick process, and it's okay to ask for help!
Enter your poet's name and the title of your poem here:
(for example, if I were searching for sources on The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, my keyword search would look like this:
"The Raven" AND "Edgar Allan Poe")
Your first step in the research process is to find information about your poet and your poem. You might find a summary/explanation article about your poem or biographical information about your poet that makes you interested in analyzing a particular theme in your paper. Once you have narrowed your topic and thought about keywords, try searching the databases below for potential sources you can use to support your thesis. If your keywords are not working, try using synonyms or ask a librarian for help!
To learn about the poem's author, use Biography in Context.
The following databases have lots of sources for poetry criticism. Begin your search by entering the name of the poem. If there are a lot of results, you can add the conjunction word "and," and then the theme you are researching.
If you struggle to find sources on your poem, it can be helpful to check other databases as well--someone in a subject area besides literature may have written about your poem and explored its themes! If you are still having difficulty finding sources that talk about your poem, contact a librarian for help.
