Criteria for Evaluating Sources

Criteria to use when evaluating a source:

A. Authority:

  • Is the author credible?
  • What are his/her credentials?
  • Is the author an expert on the subject?
  • Was the information peer-reviewed?
  • Is the publisher a university press or a large reputable publisher?

B. Currency:

  • Is the information current or out of date for your topic?
  • When was it written and published?
  • What is the issue, edition, and publication date?

C. Content Analysis:

  • Is the author's point of view objective and impartial or biased?
  • Is the information accurate?
  • Can key facts be checked in other reliable sources?
  • Is the information well researched and supported by evidence?
  • Is it relevant to your topic?
  • Does it provide any new information about your topic?
